Isle au Haut is the most remote sector of Acadia National Park offering 18 miles of hiking trails through forest, marsh, bog, and shore. Pronounced Ilaho (like Idaho) by islanders, Isle au Haut is the English translation for "High Island", the name given by Samuel Champlain in 1604 while exploring the Maine coast. Ancient shells heaps along the shores of the island tell of an Indian presence pre-Champlain. After the American Revolution, farmers, fishermen and boat builders came to the island in large numbers. A small summer community was established in the late 1800's.
Heirs of the founders of that community donated land to the federal government
as part of Acadia National Park. About one-half of the island is dedicated
to the Park, with the remainder privately owned. There is a year round
fishing community and a significant summer population. For more information
about Acadia National Park, visit the Acadia
National Park website. |
